The Treasury Department, which stands just east of the White House on Pennsylvania Avenue, is the subject of this glass negative from the National Photo Company. Begun in 1836, the Greek Revival building housed the federal government's financial offices and was a familiar sight for photographers documenting the capital. The company's Washington views were widely sold as postcards and prints, and this plate's 1921 to 1922 date places it just after the First World War. Streaks and blemishes on the glass come from natural deterioration of its original coating.
