Eastern High School's printing department is the focus of this glass negative, which shows a school that trained students in the trades alongside academic subjects. Vocational instruction in printing, including typesetting and press work, was common in American high schools in the early 1900s, and it prepared many young people for jobs in the growing printing industry of the nation's capital. The image comes from the National Photo Company, a commercial studio that documented Washington in the early twentieth century. Its plate carries streaks and blemishes from the natural breakdown of the original emulsion, which are worth noting when judging its detail.
