The gymnasium of Eastern High School, one of the oldest public high schools in Washington, appears in this view, made on a large glass negative sometime between 1910 and 1920. The National Photo Company, a commercial firm that documented the capital's streets, buildings and institutions in those years, produced thousands of such images for residents and visitors alike. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library of Congress in 1947. Faint streaks and blemishes on the glass come from natural deterioration of its original coating, which is worth keeping in mind when studying fine detail.
