Dated 1855, this bird's-eye view captures San Francisco only a few years after the Gold Rush turned a small settlement on the bay into a crowded port of tens of thousands. The high vantage point takes in the dense street grid climbing the hills, the wharves reaching into the water, and the ships crowding the anchorage. City views like this were popular in the 1850s because they promised a complete picture of a town that was changing faster than surveyors could record. Notice how the drawing mixes careful street detail with a idealized perspective, a common feature of the genre.
