Few towns changed as quickly as San Francisco, which in 1846 was still called Yerba Buena, a small Mexican-era settlement of a few hundred people clustered around its cove on the peninsula's northeast edge. That summer U.S. forces took the town during the Mexican-American War, and the name changed to San Francisco in early 1847. Bird's eye views like this one show buildings, streets, and waterfront from a high oblique angle, so the whole settlement appears at once. The gold discovery of 1848 would soon transform the place, so a view from this year captures it just before the boom.
