San Jose in 1875 was a county seat of about the size that let its civic institutions and farm trade overlap, and its streets and church spires were the main features of the town. The State Normal School, which had been training teachers in San Jose since 1862, gave the town a reputation as a center of education that drew young people from across California. Fruit growing was spreading across the Santa Clara Valley, and the drying and canning of orchard crops was starting to shape how farmers planned their land and how merchants sold it. Quicksilver from the New Almaden mines to the south moved through the county, tying the town's commerce to mining as well as to farming.
