San Jacinto, a small farming town in the San Jacinto Valley, sat within San Bernardino County when this bird's-eye view was drawn in 1886, decades before Riverside County was carved out of it in 1893. The surrounding land supported grain fields, orchards, and stock ranges, and local farmers depended on irrigation from the valley's water sources. The mid-1880s brought a land boom to Southern California, as railroad companies and promoters advertised cheap lots and new colonies across the region, and valley towns were pulled into that rush of surveying and sales. Residents would have known San Jacinto as a market and shipping point for the farms around it, a place where the promise of quick growth meant hard work on ditches, wells, and town lots.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of San Jacinto, California, drawn in 1886. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders. |
