Griff House stood on the Arbury estate near Nuneaton in Warwickshire, and it was where Mary Ann Evans, later known as George Eliot, spent much of her childhood. Her father managed the estate's land, and the family lived there from her infancy until they moved to Coventry in the early 1840s. This engraving was printed in the July 1885 issue of *The Century Magazine*. The Warwickshire countryside she knew as a girl later shaped the settings of novels such as *Adam Bede*.
