This engraving shows the front of St. Mary's Church in Paddington, then a village on the western edge of London, rendered as a formal architectural elevation. The plans are credited to the architect John Plaw, whose late eighteenth-century work on the church reflected the Georgian taste for classical proportions and restrained ornament. The print was made by the engravers Beville and van Mael from a drawing by Schwender, and it appeared as plates 45 and 46 in Christian L. Steiglitz's *Plans et Dessins*, published in Paris in 1801. The record's details come from an older caption card and have not been fully verified, but the image is a useful record of how an English parish church was presented to continental readers at the turn of the century.
