Kenilworth Castle in Warwickshire is a ruined Norman fortress whose great keep and surrounding lake defenses made it one of the most important castles in medieval England. This stereograph, made around 1897, shows the castle as Victorian travelers would have seen it, when its crumbling walls were already a popular subject for tourists. Stereo cards like this were viewed through a hand-held viewer to produce a three-dimensional image, and this one was copyrighted by T.D. Rust for the World Stereoscopic Company. Its caption tracings file it under castles and geography, a reminder of how such views were sold as armchair travel.
