Its three-word appeal, Auskunft! Rat! Hilfe! (information, advice, help), sets this 1919 color lithograph apart from many postwar German posters that spoke of victory or sacrifice. It was addressed to men returning from captivity, and large numbers of German prisoners came home through 1919 and after, often to a country under Allied blockade, with shortages and unemployment. The poster's wording suggests that these men faced practical problems of finding family, work and medical care, not only the emotional weight of return. The sheet was later held by the Rehse-Archiv für Zeitgeschichte und Publizistik, a German collection of contemporary history materials.
