Its title, roughly "the money you lend at interest is the strength of victory," turns the familiar phrase "sinews of war" into a direct appeal to the public. Victor Prouvé, a painter and printmaker from Nancy linked to the Art Nouveau circle known as the École de Nancy, signed this red lithograph in 1917. France financed much of its wartime spending through state loans sold to ordinary citizens, and posters like this one were a central tool for persuading people to buy bonds.
