This color lithograph is unusually narrow, a tall strip about 97 centimeters long and only 20 wide, with the title "Kriegsanleihe zeichnen!" ("Subscribe to the war loan!") running down its length. Printed in 1914, the year Germany entered the First World War, it made a direct appeal to ordinary citizens to lend their savings to the state. Germany financed much of the war through borrowing, and war loan drives like this one depended on posters to reach people in cities and towns. The item comes from the Rehse Archive for Contemporary History and Publicity, a former private collection now held by the Library of Congress.
