Few German war-bond posters from 1914 stretch this far: at 20 by 97 centimeters, this lithograph is a narrow strip that would have been read in passing along a street or on a public wall. Its imperative title, *Kriegsanleihe zeichnen!* ("Subscribe to the war loan!"), asks viewers to lend money to the state. Germany financed much of its wartime spending through such loans, and the first was offered in the autumn of 1914, only months after the war began. Posters like this one carried that appeal into everyday public life, framing investment in government debt as a patriotic duty.
