Helft uns siegen!" ("Help us win!") opens this 1917 color lithograph with a direct appeal to subscribe to the war loan, or Kriegsanleihe. Germany financed much of its First World War effort through a series of these loans, which asked ordinary citizens to lend money to the state in return for interest, and posters were a central tool for reaching small savers as well as wealthier investors. Signed by the artist Erler, the poster belongs to a wider body of German wartime propaganda that linked financial support at home to the soldiers fighting at the front. Its subject headings also name soldiers directly, showing how the appeal for money was framed as personal help for the men in the field.
