The German title, roughly "Help us win the victory laurel," makes the appeal explicit: buying a war bond is presented as a way to share in the outcome of the fight. Dated 1917, the poster is one of many war loan (Kriegsanleihe) campaigns Germany ran to finance the war through public subscription as well as taxation. Its color lithograph format was typical of the period, when such posters were pasted on city walls and in public places to reach workers, shopkeepers and farmers as well as the middle classes. Today posters like this one are studied as evidence of how wartime governments tried to turn private savings into patriotic duty.
