Bernard Palissy, the 16th-century French potter, is the subject of this color woodcut, which illustrates the story in its caption that he burned his own chairs to keep his furnace going while he searched for a workable enamel glaze. Palissy, who lived around 1510 to 1590, is known for rustic dishes decorated with lifelike frogs, lizards and leaves. The sheet is a Japanese woodblock print on hōsho paper, credited to Takizawa Bakin and dated 1850, and it entered the Library of Congress as part of Mrs. E. Crane Chadbourne's 1930 gift of Japanese prints.
