John Heathcoat is the subject here, though the record's "knitting machine" is a mismatch: he is best known for the bobbinet lace machine he developed in Devon in the early 1800s. Mid-nineteenth-century Japanese printmakers often produced images of Western inventions, which reached Japan through limited Dutch trade contacts. The sheet came to the Library of Congress as a gift from Mrs. E. Crane Chadbourne in 1930. Its attribution to Utagawa Hiroshige is uncertain, because the artist dates listed in the record do not fit the 1850 date.
