This woodcut shows the actor Nakamura Utaemon in the role of Kato Kiyomasa, the late sixteenth-century samurai general known for his campaigns in Korea. Printmakers of the period often portrayed kabuki performers in famous roles, and the actor's name and the character are shown together so viewers could recognize both the star and the part. The print is signed Shunkosai Hokushu, a name tied to the actor-print tradition of the 1790s, and it was cut and printed by Matsushima Seikichi. Its color and the stylized poses reflect the theatrical prints that circulated widely in Edo at that time.
