Chapter fifty-four of *The Tale of Genji* is the last of the work's fifty-four chapters, traditionally titled "The Floating Bridge of Dreams," and this color woodcut depicts that closing scene. Murasaki Shikibu, a lady at the Heian court, wrote the novel in the early eleventh century, and its stories of courtly love and aging became a favorite subject for later Japanese artists. The print is signed Hiroshige, and because it dates to 1852, within the lifetime of Utagawa Hiroshige I, it is most likely his work, though the signature alone does not settle the question.
