Edgartown, the whaling port on the south shore of Martha's Vineyard, is the subject here, and the picture dates to 1886, when the town was still living off the wealth its ships had brought home over the previous century. By that point the whaling trade was in decline, though Edgartown's harbor and its handsome captains' houses still reflected the prosperity of earlier decades. Views of the town from this period often show its white church spires, wharves and tree-lined streets, offering a snapshot of a community in transition from maritime commerce toward the summer visitors who would soon arrive.
