In 1893 Martha's Vineyard was home to several distinct towns, and this map shows three of them: Edgartown, Vineyard Haven, and Oak Bluffs. Edgartown, the Dukes County seat on the island's southwest shore, still carried the look of its whaling past, though that trade had faded decades earlier. Vineyard Haven, on the north shore, served as a main landing for steamers from the mainland and handled freight, coal, and farm goods. Oak Bluffs, then called Cottage City, drew summer visitors to the Methodist camp-meeting grounds at Wesleyan Grove, where rows of small, brightly trimmed cottages crowded the land near the harbor. Together the towns held island commerce and a growing summer trade side by side.
