Falmouth, on the southwest corner of Cape Cod, relied in 1893 on a mix of farming, cranberry growing, coastal fishing, and a growing summer trade. Its harbor village of Woods Hole had become a center of marine science, where the federal Fish Commission station and the Marine Biological Laboratory, founded in 1888, drew researchers each summer. Steamers and the railroad linked the town to Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket, and Boston, bringing visitors to hotels and cottages along the shore. Many year-round residents came from generations of whaling and seafaring families, and they watched the resort trade gradually reshape a waterfront their grandparents had known for ships and sail.
