Yarmouth, on the midsection of Cape Cod in Barnstable County, was a town of sea captains, farmers, and fishermen in 1893. Its harbors and coves on Cape Cod Bay and Nantucket Sound had long supported shipbuilding and a coasting trade, but by the 1890s many residents worked in fishing, cranberry growing, and salt-making along the marshes. The railroad that reached the Cape in the 1850s had begun bringing summer visitors to boarding houses and cottages near the water, and that traffic was slowly reshaping local life. Residents would have known the town for its white-painted captains' houses in Yarmouth Port and for the shore life that defined the Cape.
