Chatham, on the elbow of Cape Cod, looked to the sea in 1893, when cod and mackerel fishing, coastal shipping, and the salt-making and boatbuilding trades that had long supported its families still shaped daily life. The railroad had reached the town only a few years earlier, in 1887, linking it to Boston and Providence and bringing the first steady stream of summer visitors who were drawn to the beaches and quiet harbor. Shoals off Monomoy and the outer beaches had claimed many vessels, so the Chatham Lifesaving Station and its crews were a source of local pride and constant vigilance. Town meeting governed local affairs as it had for generations, and residents would have known Chatham as a seafaring village where captains' houses stood beside fish flakes and wharves.
