Falmouth, Massachusetts, in 1893 was a town of separate villages on the southwest shore of Cape Cod, each with its own character. Fishing, coastal trade, and cranberry cultivation in the bogs gave many residents their living, while rail service on the Old Colony line had brought summer visitors who stayed at seaside hotels and cottages. At Woods Hole, the Marine Biological Laboratory, founded in 1888, had begun drawing scientists to the waterfront, and steamers ran from there to Martha's Vineyard. Residents would have known the town as a place where the sea, the summer trade, and older farming and fishing life existed side by side.
