The Center Blue Lodge Room, a meeting hall inside Detroit's Masonic temple, shows the ceremonial space where members gathered for the first three degrees of Freemasonry. The photograph was made on an 8-by-10-inch glass plate sometime between 1900 and 1910, a period when fraternal organizations drew large memberships in American cities. It is part of the Detroit Publishing Company's work, a firm that documented cities and buildings across the country and sold the views to publishers and the public. The wide, straight-on view makes it useful for seeing the furnishings and decoration of the era.
