The East Blue Lodge Room was one of the meeting halls inside Detroit's Masonic Temple, where members of a Blue Lodge, the first three degrees of Freemasonry, held their ceremonies and business meetings. This 8 by 10 inch glass negative was made around 1900 to 1910 by the Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm that photographed the city, its buildings, and its institutions for sale as views. Its record notes a painter or decorating firm's label on the jacket, a small clue that interiors like this were often photographed to show off finished work. The plate reached the Library of Congress through a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
