Rendered in Chinese white and black ink wash on a small sheet of tan paper, this drawing records the fighting at Chickamauga, Georgia, on September 18 to 20, 1863. The battle, fought along a creek of the same name in the state's northwest corner, pitted the Union Army of the Cumberland against Braxton Bragg's Confederate Army of Tennessee. It was one of the bloodiest engagements of the Civil War and a Confederate victory, though its cost on both sides was heavy. The Union army fell back to Chattanooga afterward, and the record here notes troop movements and casualties, themes that the wash technique captures in soft tonal layers.
