This lithograph presents Raphael Semmes under a title that calls him captain of the "pirate Alabama," a label that reflects how Northern publishers viewed Confederate commerce raiders during the war. Semmes, a Maryland-born former U.S. Navy officer, commanded the CSS Alabama, which captured or destroyed many Union merchant ships before the USS Kearsarge sank it off Cherbourg, France, in June 1864. The print was issued by L. Prang & Co. of Boston, a firm later known for its chromolithographs, and it dates from the war years, when Semmes's exploits made him one of the most talked-about Confederate officers in the North.
