Captioned as Zeppelin No. 3, this 1907 glass negative shows an airship of the German design pioneered by Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin, whose rigid, gas-filled hulls set the pattern for long-distance air travel before the First World War. The title calls it a blimp, but a blimp is a non-rigid airship without an internal frame, so the label is loose, and the Bain News Service's caption data is itself unverified. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of New York news photographs from the early twentieth century, and it shows how novel lighter-than-air flight still seemed to American readers.
