Roosevelt appears here on a trail at Chevy Chase, the suburban community just outside Washington that straddles the Maryland line. The president was an avid horseman and walker, and the wooded paths of the area suited the outdoor exercise he valued while in office. The picture dates to about 1904, the year he won election to a full term, and it came from the Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm known for its large-format views of American places and scenery.
