Titled in German as *Chanute's Gleitflieger*, or "Chanute's glider," this 1896 print shows one of the experimental gliders built under the engineer Octave Chanute. Chanute, a Chicago-area civil engineer known for his railroad bridge work, had published a widely read survey of flying machines in 1894 and then sponsored unpowered glider trials that summer on the sand dunes at Dune Park, Indiana, near Lake Michigan. With assistants including Augustus Herring and William Avery, he tested multiwing gliders that helped inform later aircraft design. The record comes from an older caption card and is not fully verified, so the exact date and setting should be checked against other sources.
