Oreana, a small frontier settlement in Nevada's silver-mining country, is the subject of this albumen print, which Timothy H. O'Sullivan made in 1867. It is plate 83 from the *Geological Exploration of the Fortieth Parallel*, a survey under geologist Clarence King that mapped the land along the 40th parallel for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. O'Sullivan's photographs from the expedition are among the earliest records of the mining towns and remote terrain of the West, and this view shows the modest buildings and open ground of a community that existed largely because of the mineral wealth nearby.
