The title names Evangeline, the heroine of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's 1847 narrative poem about an Acadian woman separated from her fiancé during the British expulsion of the Acadians from Nova Scotia in 1755. The poem was enormously popular in the nineteenth century, and its heroine became a familiar subject in American painting, illustration and printmaking. This example was registered for copyright around June 1877, and its shelflist card links it to a name, McCleave, though that attribution is unverified. The literary and cultural background of the figure is well documented, but the print's maker and origin should be treated as provisional.
