In May 1930, architects and amusement consultants gathered around a clay model of the fair, studying its layout in three dimensions rather than on flat drawings. The exposition was the Century of Progress International Exposition, which Chicago staged in 1933 and 1934 to mark the centennial of its incorporation as a city. Bringing building designers together with people who understood entertainment shows how much the planners wanted the grounds to draw crowds as well as display new technology. A physical model also let them judge sightlines, walking distances, and how the entertainment areas would sit alongside the exhibition halls.
