Domes rising above the valley floor, with streams and trees in the foreground, mark this as one of the early views of Yosemite Valley. The print is an albumen print, made from a large glass negative, the standard method for landscape work in California in the mid-1860s. Those years were significant because Congress granted Yosemite Valley to the state of California for public use in 1864, and images like this helped introduce the valley to people far beyond the Sierra Nevada.
