Carleton Watkins's view of "The Domes" turns the camera toward the granite formations that rise above Yosemite Valley, the sheer rock forms that drew travelers long before the valley became a national park. The card belongs to Watkins's New Series of Pacific Coast Views, issued in 1879 by publisher William I. Marshall, who sold these photographs to a public eager for the Far West. Viewed through a stereoscope, the two nearly identical images merged into a single scene with depth, which is why such cards filled American parlors in the 1870s.
