A hunter, rather than a landscape or the valley's famous granite walls, is the figure at the center of this stereograph, which sets it apart from the many Yosemite views of the same era. It is one of the American Views series issued in the 1870s by the publisher William I. Marshall, whose cards were sold to a public eager for images of the American West. Stereo cards like this were viewed through a hand-held stereoscope, which gave the scene a three-dimensional depth that flat prints could not. The valley was then becoming a national symbol of wilderness, so a figure set against its scenery shows how visitors and photographers framed the land for audiences far away.
