Looking east from the Cosmopolitan Walk, this view of Yosemite Valley is printed with its elevation, 2,634 feet, which tells you the photographer meant it as a survey of the valley floor as much as a scenic picture. The valley was still new to most Americans in 1869. Its granite walls and waterfalls had drawn public attention only in the previous decade, and the state had taken it under protection in 1864. Stereoviews like this one were sold by the thousands to parlors across the country, so the image helped turn a remote Sierra valley into a place many people felt they had already seen.
