Upper Yosemite Fall, which plunges roughly 1,600 feet in the valley's eastern wall, is the subject here, shown in a stereograph card from 1871. The card is part of Carleton Watkins's Pacific Coast series, issued under the publisher William I. Marshall, and it was one of the stereoviews that carried Yosemite's scenery to parlors across the country during the 1870s. Watkins's careful exposures of the valley helped build public awareness of the place before it was set aside as a state park in 1864 and later became a national park. Viewed through a stereoscope, the card gives the falls a convincing sense of depth and height.
