Upper Yosemite Fall, seen from a vantage point about 1,600 feet up on the Eagle Point Trail, gives a view of the waterfall that few visitors of the era could easily reach. Carleton Watkins, the California photographer known for his large-format work in the Yosemite Valley, made the negative, and this stereo card was published by William I. Marshall, who sold views of the valley and the Pacific Coast in the 1870s and 1880s. Stereographs like this one were viewed through a hand-held viewer to create a three-dimensional effect, and they brought the valley's cliffs and falls into parlors across the country. The card belongs to Watkins' New Series, a later set of views that helped establish Yosemite's image as a national landmark.
