Half Dome rises above the valley floor here, its smooth granite face doubled in the still water of the Merced River. Yosemite Valley was carved by glaciers over long spans of time, and the rock that remains is some of the most visibly sculpted in the Sierra Nevada. Early visitors in the nineteenth century prized views like this one, and photographers and painters helped turn the valley into a national symbol. Yosemite was set aside by Congress in 1864 as a protected grant, a step that came before the national park was created in 1890.
