Few images from the 1905 fair show the sky as well as the ground. Here a balloon rises over Guild's Lake in Portland, Oregon, where the Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition drew crowds that summer and fall. The fair marked 100 years since the Lewis and Clark expedition reached the Pacific coast in 1805, and aerial stunts like this one were a popular draw at turn-of-the-century expositions. The card was issued as a stereograph, so the scene was meant to be viewed through a stereo viewer for a three-dimensional effect.
