Among the many cartoons of the 1844 campaign, this lithograph is distinguished by its balloon, which carries a group of political figures toward the presidency. The record names Henry Clay, James K. Polk, Martin Van Buren, John C. Calhoun, Thomas Hart Benton, Andrew Jackson, and Theodore Frelinghuysen among its subjects. Published in New York by James Baillie and signed by H. Bucholzer, it was followed two weeks later by the same artist's *Bursting the Balloon*, which suggests the pair were meant to be read together.
