A crowd spread across an open field, many of them craning their necks skyward, as a large gas balloon lifts off in the middle distance. Balloon ascensions like this one were popular public spectacles in the United States through the late 1800s and early 1900s, when aeronauts often charged admission and launched from fairgrounds, town commons and exhibition grounds. Gathered crowds were part of the event itself, turning a technical flight into a shared civic occasion. The scene is worth studying for its sense of scale, both in the enormous gas envelope and in the spectators who came out to witness it.
