The photograph shows a crowd gathered in expectation of a balloon ascension at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, held in 1893 to mark the 400th anniversary of Columbus's arrival in the Americas. Balloon flights were among the fair's popular spectacles, and the sight of a rising balloon drew large, eager audiences to the grounds. The print was issued by the Souvenir Photographic Co. of Chicago, a firm that sold views of the fair to visitors who wanted a lasting record of their visit. Its focus on the waiting spectators, rather than the balloon alone, offers a useful glimpse of how the public experienced the exposition.
