The Midway Plaisance, the mile-long strip of rides, exhibits, and cultural displays that ran between the fair's two main sites, appears here with a balloon overhead. The World's Columbian Exposition opened in Chicago in 1893 to mark the 400th anniversary of Columbus's landing in the Americas, and it drew millions of visitors to its white neoclassical buildings and lagoons. Balloon ascents were a popular attraction at expositions of the period, offering visitors a view over the grounds. The record for this print is based on an old caption card and is not fully verified, so the exact date and the balloon's details should be checked against other sources.
