A portrait of Vice Admiral Hilary P. Jones, a career officer in the United States Navy, survives on a glass negative dated July 14, 1921, made by the National Photo Company. The company worked out of Washington, D.C., and recorded public figures and government life in the early twentieth century. The sitting falls in the years after the First World War, when the Navy was adjusting to peacetime. The title and date come from notes on the negative sleeve and a related plate, so they are best read as provisional, and the streaks and blemishes visible on the plate reflect natural deterioration of its original coating.
