A pencil and Chinese white drawing on tan paper records the marriage of Captain De Hart and Nellie Lammond at the camp of the 7th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry in Virginia, dated March 18, 1863. Weddings within army camps were uncommon, and the scene shows a formal ceremony set among soldiers and tents rather than in a church or home. The Army of the Potomac was then under Joseph Hooker, who took command that January and is named in the record, so the image reflects daily life for Union troops during a difficult winter of the war. Its soft, light-toned wash gives the gathering an intimate feel.
